Building Urban School Gardens

GetInline

Won’t it be cool when all schools have a farm? All kids need to learn where food really comes from (la tierra, not Aisle 3) and be educated in food justice. Our future depends on it!  What can you do to help bring a little greenery into your local schools? Donate some seeds and pots? Volunteer your time? In the meanwhile, help support this upcoming event that’s working to build farms in Brooklyn schools.

Yes, we can!

Last week, a good friend of mine hosted a tomato-canning party at her home.  Canning is a great way to preserve tomatoes so you can enjoy a tast of summer in the dead of winter.  Among the duties we shared were:  preparing the tomatoes for the canning process, sanitizing the jars, packing the tomatoes and boiling the jars. It was a lot of work but also very gratifying and lots of fun.  I’m thinking of canning peaches at some point and would also like to learn how to pickle. I’ll report back in the winter to let you know how the tomatoes turned out!

I love fried green tomatoes! This week our CSA was blessed with green tomatoes, a TON of peaches and plums as well as the following: corn, red leaf lettuce, a variety of summer squash, green beans, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers and green peppers.  On the menu: Stone-cold fruit salad, Green bean, squash & carrot stir-fry, Fried green tomatoes (love, love), Grilled corn, Zucchini bread, Summer salad, Tomato, cucumber & green pepper juice (it’s really good!), and Curried squash soup.

Dancing In September

September’s here! For many of us this means back to school, the end of summer (though not quite yet..), and a time to begin reflecting on the remaining months of the year. What are your goals for September? What small steps do you need to take to co-create your reality? What new ideas/beliefs/ways of being will you welcome into your life this month? Are there old ideas/beliefs/ways of being that are holding you back that you need to let go? Stick them in the compost or recycling bin! Today’s a great day to start. Happy September, everyone!
