Do you always think you could have done better even when you did your very best? Do you deny yourself joy in your life? Are you easily swayed off your path by the strong opinion of others? There’s a remedy for that! (and no, it’s not a colorful pill) Bach Flower remedies are homeopathic treatments created by Dr. Edward Bach that restore emotional balance using flower essences. The remedies address ailments of the heart and soul, which we often end up self-medicating with alcohol, working too much, denial, etc. Adding the drops to your glass of water provides a meditative moment in which you reflect on your situation while you wash it away. Pictured here is the very popular Rescue Remedy. Click here for a list of all the remedies, maybe there’s one that’s just right for you.

How far does your food travel before it gets to your plate? A few steps from your window sill/backyard/community garden? A few (hundred) miles from your local farmer? Or does your food travel farther than your Tia Lidia from Quito? The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York is challenging you (yes, you) to eat local and sustainable foods for the month of September. The NY State Locavore Challenge is registering folks for one day, one week, or the entire month. NOFA-NY provides you with pantry lists, recipes and other resources to help you through your quest. Anyone care to join me? I’m debating whether to do a week or the whole month!

Last week I prepared my Stone-Cold Fruit Salad for the wonderful people at the Union Square Greenmarket. This is the time to get your peaches, plums, apricots and nectarines. The market has a wiiiide array of stone fruit- lots of different colors, shapes and tastes. Ask your farmers about the various fruits, they’ll be more than happy to explain to you what’s what. I will be sending out a recipe for a lovely peach dish to all those who get my newsletter. If you are not yet registered, click here to sign up.

Week 7: Introducing blackberries! Also in this week’s mix was mixed greens, rainbow chard, russian kale, summer squash, cucumbers, plums, broccoli and beets. This bounty went to my friend Tomoko while I was away visiting family. Tomoko, thanks for photographing the goods and let us know what was on the menu!

I read “21 Pounds In 21 Days” by Roni DeLuz, RN, ND, Ph.D., to guide a client who was interested in undergoing this cleanse. I found this book to be extremely informative and concise in the areas of modern day toxins and the importance of cleansing. I especially liked that the testimonials kept it real and didn’t sugarcoat the experience. People said what worked for them and what kinda sucked. One of my favorite theories of DeLuz’s is productive vs. recreational eating. Productive eating serves to nourish our bodies, which is what we should be doing. Recreational eating is what you do to entertain your tastebuds, because it’s “time” to eat, or because you are avoiding an emotional issue. What kind of eating will you be doing today?

I recently had the opportunity to cater a birthday dinner for 17 in Pennsylvania. I kept a farm-t0-table theme to celebrate the birthday girl’s summer season. Here’s what she had to say:
I just treated myself by hiring Marian Isel Wellness to cater my birthday dinner. Not only did this give me time to socialize, but it allowed me to learn from Marian during the process. The food was prepared with skill and love. The dishes were all delicious, light and filling, as well beautiful! Perfect for a summer evening. The textures and flavor of each dish complimented the other and colors and the presentation were top notch! All of the ingredients were purchased from a local farmers maket and Marian took care and consideration for allergies when preparing the menu. Continue reading ‘Praise for Marian Isel Wellness’

For three Saturdays this summer (August 7, 14 & 21), NYC streets will be all about free, fun, and pedestrian-friendly recreation. Summer Streets NYC provides dance, music, yoga & fitness classes, swimming in Dumpster Pools (sans trash, of course), and miles and miles of car-free bike riding. You can register for races, a joy bike-ride set to music or enjoy theater perfomances. I biked this route last year and have to say it was one of my favorite NYC summer moments to date. Get out and enjoy some exercise!
