Week 6 introduced cauliflower and broccoli! I ended up giving it away to a good friend, gotta share the wealth! Other items included: russian kale, summer squash, peaches, red currants, potatoes, raspberries, collards (they’re so big, I want someone to fan me with them) and carrots. On the menu: Curried summer squash soup (this is really nice served cold, too), Shredded carrot & currants with cous cous salad), Marinated raw kale salad, Carrot & cucumber bagelwich and Peaches and Raspberries served as is.
Week 6

Häagen-Dazs has introduced a series of natural ice-creams called Häagen-Dazs 5 made with only 5 ingredients, minimal processing and less fat. Whole foods that are natural and unprocessed are what’s best for your body. Your system cannot recognize artifical ca-ca (like stuff ending in “-ose” or Color # whatever) and has a difficult time breaking it down. This stresses out your poor organs, who work over-time to figure out what to do with all that mess and leads to toxic overload. Hopefully more companies will follow suit and keep it simple! Some of the flavors are even made with lactose-reduced milk as well. Yummy flavors include ginger, passion fruit and caramel.

Throughout history we’ve known of political refugees or people migrating with hopes of a better economic life and future for their families. But what happens when people become refugees due to climate disasters? This is happening NOW and is going to continue unless we begin caring for our Earth, asap. Learn more about these stories of displacement in Michael Nash’s documentary, “Climate Refugees”, playing tonight at Lincoln Center. Also showing is Sara Grady’s short, “The Food and Climate Connection: From Heating The Planet to Healing It”. These films are party of the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s “Green Screen” series, click here to purchase tickets.

Our dreams in life are as important as the food we eat in regards to overall good health. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s too late, you are too old, there’s not enough time or money to follow your dreams. Be brave, remember that ‘no’ just means you have to find another way and do your thing! What’s ONE STEP you can take today towards your dreams? Big dreams are comprised of small acts of bravery. I leave you with the poem ‘A Dream Deferred’ by the great Langston Hughes:

A client sent this photo recently of her daughter eating a kale and bean sprout salad. Together we are working on creating healthier meals for herself and in turn, for her family as well. Healthy eating is tasty and contaigous. My client swore up & down her children would not go for greens; I suggested she simply put them out on the table along with the rest of the meal. This way, her children would begin to familiarize themselves with new foods and associate them as part of dinner (or lunch, breakfast, etc.) time. And, voila! Please note: this did not happen overnight, but we did get there! What new food can you begin introducing to your friends or family today?

Looking forward to making some more fruit-based desserts!

The Bed-Stuy Farm Share is my local community supported agricultural project and one of my weekly highlights! Each week volunteers set up shop in the neighborhood and help members collect their share of goodness. We exchange recipes, post on an email group, and participate in different activities that count toward our volunteer hours (4 hours per season, not bad at all) like helping farmers upstate! There are still shares available, and since we’re a few weeks in the season, memberships are being pro-rated. Interested in joining? Click here for more information. Did I mention that the folks in my CSA are freakin’ adorable? Continue reading ‘My CSA Is Cuter Than Yours’

Saving energy is not just about saving money, it’s about saving our earth’s resources! And avoiding a NYC blackout! Con Edison has posted over 100 ways to cut down your energy bill$ AND learn a few things along the way about weatherization, heating, cooling, water heating, lighting and appliances. For example, did you know that you should pack items lightly in the freezer (#73)? Neither did I. Though I think this is a great list, I do not agree with #81 telling you to use your microwave over your oven or stove for re-heating food. It may save more energy but it will kill more nutrients. Legendary NYC Samba dance instructor Quenia Ribiero is teaching a free dance class tomorrow (7/22) at Columbia University.
