Spring Cleaning? Recycle Your Clothes!

Did you know you can recycle your clothing, shoes, coats, hats, linens, bedding, scarves, belts and handbags? According to the NYC Department of Sanitation, NY residents chuck 193,000 tons of textiles into our landfills each year. Take action by dropping your clothes & textiles off at your local Greenmarket. For details & schedule information on the Greenmarket closest to you, click here. If you live outside of the NYC area, call your local Goodwill or Salvation Army for recycling information.

Are There ANTs In Your Brain?

ants

I was watching Daniel G. Amen, author of “Change Your Brian Change Your Body”, on PBS discussing the epidemic of ANTs in the human brain. ANT stands for Automatic Negative Thought. If you have too many, negative thoughts will cause an infestation in your brain, leading you to feel guilty, hopeless, angry, bad, helpless and/or crappy. Sound familar? He explained how ANTs have an adverse affect on our body and brain health. The key is to identify the ANTs and change the way you think about yourself or the situation you are dealing with in a more favorable fashion. This is powerful stuff that really works! See if you can identify your ANTS and work on changing one this month. (P.S. I did get the book and will review it as soon as I’m done.)

Red Chard Is The New Green

L1060640

This week’s featured green is red chard. After washing and de-stemming, I sliced the chard into ribbons and steamed for 5 minutes. It was very easy to prepare-I just added olive oil, lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Red chard is packed with Vitamins A & C. One night I served it with a vegan eggplant parmesan and the next night over a brown rice + veggie stir fry. Yum!

Reading Labels: Sugar

Reading labels requires some detective work. I was comparing the amount of sugar in granola cereals when I noticed the varying serving sizes on different boxes. 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 3/4 cup- all these various serving sizes can make you believe you are consuming less sugar then you really are depending on your portion size. I also noticed the sugar was labeled in grams. How much is that anyway? There are 4.2 grams of sugar in a teaspoon. Peep the next label you come across and see if you read things differently. Information is key!
