Today I visited the Alemany Farmer’s Market in San Francisco, the first one in the state of California. There was an amazing selection of organic citrus, greens, herbs, nuts and lots of homemade goodies like fresh papusas and tamales. I noticed two things that were very different from the farmer’s markets I visit in New York.
1. The clientele was incredibly diverse.
and
2. The prices were AFFORDABLE.
Why is this such a surprise for me? Isn’t this the way it should be everywhere? It can get really expensive to purchase organic and healthy foods in NYC, but here in San Francisco it seemed like everyone has this opportunity available to them.
Here’s what I found for $1 at Alameny:
a bunch of kale
a bunch of cilantro
a pound of oranges (75 cents a pound at some stalls)
a basket of lemons
I’ll do some more research to find out what the deal is between west and east coast farmer’s markets. If anyone has any knowledge on this matter, please let me know.

This morning I conducted a juicing demonstration for the Momofuku office folks in Union Square. They recently got a juicer for their office, isn’t that cool? I prepared 3 different kinds of juices and 1 raw soup, discussed the benefits of juicing, adding supplements and tips for facilitating a juice cleanse. They even drank all the green juice! This is a great example of incorporating health into the workplace. By juicing instead of (or perhaps in addition to ;>) the usual coffee run, this team is bringing highly nutritious and low caolrie health tonics into their systems. I am curious to see how this affects their overall work energy and productivity. I’ll be sure to check in with them soon. In the meanwhile, what can you do to incorporate health and wellness into your work place?

Have you donated aid to the Hatian people yet? If you haven’t, it’s still not too late. This is an opportunity for humanity to come together and help our fellow brothers and sisters. It’s our responsibility. I am listing a few organizations here that provide different services to Haiti. Be sure to do your research so you are donating to an organization lined up with your beliefs and values. Rebuilding Haiti is going to be a long term project and I will continue to post more information on Haiti in the days and months to come.
